President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly appointed Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi as the director for his 2019 presidential election campaign, making a strong indication that the president is determined to retain his seat.
According to THISDAY Newspapers, Amaechi has confirmed receipt of his appointment letter from the president and would be making a formal announcement at a media briefing next week.
Also, an Abuja-based TV show host, Osasu Igbinedion confirmed that Amaechi had taped a confirmation interview that would air later on January 12 on AIT.
David Iyofor, spokesperson for Mr Amaechi did not confirm nor deny the reports same with presidential spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Femi Adeshina are also yet to confirm the appointment.
The appointment of Amaechi as campaign director for 2019 presidential election will be his second appointment. In 2015, he was the campaign director for the election that brought defeat to the ruling party for the first time in Nigeria’s history. Amaechi led the campaign then while he was the sitting governor in Rivers State.
The news of Amaechi’s appointment is coming weeks after President Buhari dropped hints of running second term for President.
President Buhari was elected in March 2015 and assumed office in May. He fell ill and was away for several months between 2016 and 2017.
