Boko Haram insurgents returned to Damaturu, Yobe State capital today rocking a police checkpoint where no fewer than eight persons were killed.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Toyin Gbadegesin, said: “eight persons were killed today (Monday) in Damaturu during a bomb incident carried out by suspected members of the dreaded sect the Boko Haram.”
According to the police spokesman, three policemen and five insurgents were consumed by the explosion which occurred around 11am Monday. He added that two other security operatives injured in the attack are currently receiving treatment at the Damaturu Specialist Hospital.
Explaining how the incident happened, Gbadegesin said two cars suspected to be carrying explosive devices were apprehended at the checkpoint and while trying to move the suspects to the State Police Command, the insurgents triggered the Improvised Explosive Devices(IEDs) on them , killing five persons on the spot while three others died later in the hospital.
He said men of the Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) of the state Police Command were later deployed to diffuse other IEDs being conveyed by the terrorists.
