If you had come across Ade Okelarin when he was studying for his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, you might have been tempted to call him a geek and that believe would have been given further backing when he obtained a master’s degree in Bioinformatics and got his first job working as a research scientist at GlaxoSmithKline and would have most likely seen him in a lab coat while working with some specie unfathomable to laymen.
Today however, you would most likely see the ‘Anglo-Nigerian’ with a camera and tripod, working with some model at an exotic location.
For the renowned photographer, the journey from the laboratory to was never planned as he found a pastime taking pictures while in between jobs about 7 years ago. In a twinkling of an eye, Ade found a new-grown passion and even though he had reservations when his first would-be clients requested he covered their wedding, photography became the thing he couldn’t live about and Àsìkò which means ‘the moment’ in his native Yoruba language was birthed.
Ade who currently lives both in London and Nigeria says his wife is his inspiration. He also says, “My photography is a reflection of who I am and what I feel, it’s my personal account on how light falls on emotion. I create concept driven realities that combine the essence of romance, history, fantasy and identity. My work is the personification of the moment, an apt self reflective. Photography is my calling, my passion and my profession”.
Within an impressive time of 7 years, Àsìkò has worked with a number of International and Nigerian magazines like Pride, WOW, FAB, TW, New African Woman, Fashizblack, Iconography, and his work has been featured on a variety of international sites, most recently Vogue Italy. Àsìkò was also nominated at the 2011 Style Awards for the Creative Communicator Of The Year award.
Ade leads a relatively quiet life outside his work. In his words, “When I am not hanging out with my wife or taking photos, you can find me in a café reading a good graphic novel or a science fiction piece or even more image related stuff (it’s a bit of an obsession). I also enjoy cooking and cake eating. Movies nights are a must!
