Adebayo Shittu Reacts To Election Postponement

Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu debunk any ulterior motive by the electoral umpire

Nigeria’s communications minister, Adebayo Shittu, has rebuked insinuations that INEC’s postponement of the 2019 general election was aimed at favouring the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

He made this known on Saturday in Saki, Northern part of Oyo sate, while reacting to the late-minute postponement of the election by the electoral umpire.

National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, had shocked many Nigerians by announcing at about 2:40 a.m. on Saturday, few hours to commencement of the polls, that the elections had been postponed over logistic problems.

According to Yakubu, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, 23 February. While the governorship and State Assembly election polls will also hold on Saturday, 9 March.

Shittu argued that there was no ulterior motive behind the postponement of the general election. He added that this was not the first time elections were postponed in Africa’s most populous nation.

Speaking to journalists in his hometown, the communications minister said that the extension would help his party, the APC, intensify  its campaign for all its candidates.
