Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike is facing an increasingly mainstream backlash against ban on all forms of #EndSARS protest in the state, with a growing number of local celebrities, activists and residents arguing the restriction is a human rights violation.

There have been a series of violent protests throughout the country in recent weeks with many Nigerians calling for the now-dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), tactical police unit notorious for unjust harassments, extra-judicial killings and extortion.

In a statement on Monday October 12, the state Commissioner for Information, Paulinus Nsirim, said since the IGP has scrapped all SARS formations across the country, there is no need for any form of #EndSARS protest.

Nsirim also noted that violators will be arrested and brought to book. The order, however, has angered a lot of people as criticism now is mounting from residents and activists that the restriction is unconstitutional. Others complain his latest moves were not democratic and full of dictatorship.

“Parents and Guardians are therefore advised to ensure that their children or wards do not violate this order. Law enforcement agencies are also directed to ensure that the ban is enforced and that violators are brought to book,” part of  the public statement read.
