Bayelsa Polls Remain Inconclusive As INEC Cancels Election In Southern Ijaw


The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has cancelled the election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, said going by the reports of substantial violence and irregularities received from officials and observers, “the commission has decided in the interest of the process’ integrity to cancel the governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government.”

The violence, which erupted on Saturday, following the commencement of the electoral process, led to its postponement till Sunday during which it was disrupted again.

According to the REC, a new date would be announced for the election in the local government, the largest in the state with a total of 120,827 registered voters.

From the results collated so far, Governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party leads Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress with over 30,000 votes.
