A magistrate court sitting in Abuja today, 16th December, dropped charges against the Director of Radio Biafra and Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on all counts of criminal conspiracy and ownership of an unlawful society brought against him by the federal government
Magistrate Shuaibu Usman struck out all charges levelled against Kanu by the government saying: “The accused person is hereby discharged and the case struck out.” According to him, he had no option than to discharge the accused since the SSS, through its lawyer, had filed for a discontinuation of the case.
Counsel to the State Security Services, Moses Idakwo who had accused Kanu of sponsoring terrorism in Nigeria, stated that further investigations by the SSS had shown that charges against Mr. Kanu could not be entertained by a Magistrate Court due to lack of jurisdiction and had elected to take the case to a higher court which has jurisdiction to entertain charges bordering on terrorism.
However, although he has been discharged by the magistrate court, Mr. Kanu still few more steps to freedom as he is also being tried at a Federal High Court.
Since, the arrest and detention of Kanu by Nigeria’s secret Police, in Lagos, on Saturday, October 17, wave of protests, engineered by IPOB, as well as members of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) had swept through the South-East and parts of the South-South, demanding an immediate and unconditional release of Kanu.
