Burna Boy, Ajebutter, Phyno, Seyi Shay And Others: Top 7 Artistes To Watch In 2013

They are new, they are young, they are on fire and they have managed to climb to the top of their game in such a very short time!

Do not mix them up with the crowd because these artistes are definitely outstanding. They gave us massive hits towards the end of 2012 and although most of them are without albums – they made us listen… and boy did we listen!

Here is a rundown of the Top 7 fresh and promising artistes to be on the lookout for this year… 2013 is definitely going to rock!

Phyno

Azubuike Chibuzo Nelson aka Phyno is from Anambra State in the eastern part of Nigeria.
Phyno is a producer/ artiste and has been in the music industry, working underground for more than nine years. He has done production work with A-list Nigerian artistes like Timaya, illbliss, M.I, Mr Raw, Bracket, Flavour, Waje to mention a few.

Phyno first caught people’s attention when he released “Shut the City Down” but so many thought he was a 1 hit wonder until his follow up single which had the Choc boys on it.

We were convinced beyond reasonable doubt about his production skillz when he produced Ill Bliss’ “Ana Achi Kwanu” and so also his rapping dexterity when he did “Ghost Mode” featuring Olamide.

No doubt, Phyno has left his imprints on the sand of time of Nigerian Music Industry and we expect more from him this year!

Ajebutter 22

Ajebutter 22 does not instinctively strike you as a breakout star, probably because of his lay back style of rapping (that depicts his name – Ajebutter) but after listening to two massive hits from him, one will be forced to think otherwise especially with the crowd response in shows and club.

He came into the game as part of the group Soyinka’s Afro alongside his sister. In 2012 he pursued his solo career which saw him rise as one of the promising acts to look out for. He is scheduled to drop his much talked about mixtape this year and with his efforts, one can only expect a successful 2013 for the artiste.

The most beautiful thing so far about Ajebutter’s career is that he has been able to rise from being an upcoming to a mega star performing alongside the likes of D’Banj, Tuface in just a couple of months!

Burna Boy

Apart from falling off the stage during his performance, every other thing about Burna Boy has been on the rise and burning up! Contrary to popular believe that Burna Boy just broke into the Nigerian music scene with his hit single ‘Like to Party’ the singer has been around for a while, even released a mixtape, an official single titled ‘Abeg Abeg Abeg’ coupled with a video for the track. Nonetheless Damini Ogulu struck gold when the video for ‘Like to Party’ premiered, the success of the clip catapulted the youngster to a height that takes many ages to reach and with the release of the video for his follow up single ‘Tonight’, Burna Boy is sure headed for the apex.

Burna Boy has revealed that his debut album is to be released in the second quarter of 2013 and just like us, we know you can’t wait!

Yemi Alade

Yemi won the first edition of the Peak Talent Show and with the release of “Ghen Ghen” the reason is not farfetched. She dropped a not-so-popular single earlier with Eldee titled “Fimisile” but she’s sure not letting up as her new single seems to be catching on.

Now signed to Effyzzie Music Group camp, she’s carving a niche for herself on the Nigerian music scene dishing out critically acclaimed singles like ‘Ghen Ghen Love’, ‘Uche Face’ (with boy band L.O.S), ‘Bamboo’ to name a few and having mind-blowing collaborations like ‘Rock Ur Body’ with Dipp and ‘Coma’ with A-Q. Yemi worked her way to her current position in roughly 6 months. The raved video for her smash ‘Ghen Ghen Love’ is enabling the cut gain momentum and word is the video for Bamboo is in the making. With much determination and vigor oozing from her persona, I dear say she’s one to lookout for in 2013.

DRB Lasgidi

Finally we have Nigerian artistes who are writing again! Have you heard “Toyin”? If you have, you will know these guys are not to be toyed with. Not only is their music gaining ground but this boy band recently headlined a concert in Lagos, for a new band, one will agree that this is not an easy thing to do but they managed to pull it off.

With the Shank assisted ‘Selecta’ gaining airplay, 2013 might see the group achieve greater things.

Seyi Shay

Not an average Nigerian most favorite artiste but Seyi is climbing up the ladder one step at a time. She was formerly the lead singer of British Pop/R&B girl group, From Above which was signed to Sony/Columbia Record. She was also under Flytime Music before she decamped to Now Musik. With an out-of-the-world stage craft, one will agree with her debut single that we are truly loving her way. If you don’t love her for her

L.O.S (Loud On Sound)

OMG!!! Have you seen the video of “Bad Guy P”? This band is on top of things. The group was formed in 2008 but started putting out work late 2009. “The takeover” as they are often referred to is made of 3 rappers and a singer. Their music is a blend of afro-pop, hip-pop and RnB. With the video of their single gaining ground in Nigeria and beyond and their partnership with Storm Records, it’s no doubt that 2013 holds a lot of goodies for the group.

Also the video for ‘On fire’ has been shot and will be released very soon. Their music cuts across all age groups, they have what the rap lovers all looking for, they also have the right dishes for the RnB lovers, and also have the right dishes for those that love techno music. In 2012, they toured first with SamSung & Spinlet, then with Hennessy and also held a sold out concert (standing room only) at Federal Palace Hotel in July of the same year.
