Cars Set On Fire As Armed Thugs, Protesters Clash At #EndSARS Rally In Abuja
What started as a peaceful #EndSARS rally in Abuja Monday ended with allegedly over 200 vehicles on fire, tear gas deployed, protesters being attacked by the police, and more destruction.
The rally coincided with similar violent events that have been going on in the country’s capital around the country in the aftermath of Special Anti-Robbery Squad’s disbandment.
According to Punch, a vehicle was set ablaze earlier in the day following a clash between protesters and individuals suspected to be paid hoodlums. The rally started peacefully in the morning from various protest grounds including AYA roundabout, Mararaba/Nyanya road, after that the group marched to the Abuja airport road.
The protest had a large turnout despite several disruption from authorities throughout the day. Things remained peaceful for the first few hours, but became tense in the afternoon when cars were set on fire and tear gas deployed on the crowds.
Eyewitness have however shared that at least three protesters have lost their lives from today’s clash. See video below from the scene below:
