Celebrity Focus: Highlife Music Duo Bracket Wins Against All Odds, Bounces Back With “Temperature”

Obumneme Ali (Smash), Nwachukwu Ozioko (Vast) and Igwebuike Amobi (Bistop) that made up the group Bracket, came into the spotlight with the 2006 hit “Happy Day” after they were referred to the CEO of Ape Planet, Nwachukwu Mamah, who signed them on to the newly established record label.

According to Vast, himself and Bistop had been making music before Smash joined the team. They went on to release their debut album “Happy Day” the same year. The album, although had great songs with an R&B touch, it didn’t do too well so the group’s spotlight soon dwindled and it went on like that for over two years.

The group emerged from Enugu but came to Lagos haven been referred to Ape Planet’s boss. They used to perform at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where they were students. They also went to choice locations in Enugu to cover songs such as R. Kelly, Tupac and other American artists. In 2002, the duo finally competed in Star Quest competition, although they did not win, it boosted their drive.

Ape Planet, with some support from Kennis Music was able to find their footing in 2009 and the group Bracket hit back with “Yori Yori” at the time when J. Martins was introducing a fresh sound into the industry. Being one of the first to leverage on the new sound, Bracket’s “Yori Yori” became a smash hit! Bistop, during the hiatus, had walked out of the group and caused quite a controversy after “Yori Yori” became a hit.

Their “Least Expected” album followed in the same year with hit tracks like “No Time,” “Yori Yori Remix,” “Ada Owerri” and more. The album which, unlike the first delved towards Highlife established Bracket as a force with collaborations with artists such as P-Square, J.Martins, and more.

Their follow up album “Cupid Stories,” after their success, brought the even more successes with T-Joe, Ahbu Ventures and Obaino Music handing the boys N15m for the album. The 14 track album featured artistes like Wizkid, M.I, 2Face, Banky W and Flavor, while Fliptyce, Mastakraft, Dekomzy, Meca E and Phyno produced it.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Vast was infected with a type of cancer of the blood but he survived it and has gone on to shoot a video for their new single titled “Temperature” which was released on the 21st of May 2013.

They were given a honorary award by the Mayor of Philadelphia in 2012 and has been nominated at several awards including the NEA Awards in 2012.
