Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson is one actress whose career has been literally been riddled with scandals. From having spats with fellow artistes to battling relationship issues, Mercy is no stranger to having her name in the media under negative light and none of these scandals was bigger than that which threatened to end her marriage even before the wedding had held.
Such constant and persistent controversy has been known to end many a promising career but not Mercy’s, as the undisputedly talented actress has refused to let her many negatives stifle her talents, rising from an unknown to one of the elite highest paid acts in Nollywood, reportedly charging between 1.5 million to 2 million per movie appearance.
Mercy Johnson Ozioma was born in Lagos on August 28, 1984 into the family of Mr Daniel, a former naval officer and Mrs Elizabeth Johnson. Mercy hails from Okene in Kogi state, and is the sixth of her family’s seven children. She had her primary education, first in Calabar, where she stayed with her father, and later at the Nigerian Navy Primary School, Lagos. For her secondary education, she attended Rivers State Secondary School and the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, both in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
Growing up for Mercy was tough and she had difficulties paying her school fees most times, once working as a housemaid to survive. Thus, when she failed her University entrance examinations (JAMB UME) she tried her hands at acting.
Now known as Mercy Johnson-Okojie, she made her acting debut in 2004, in the movie, “The Maid” in which she played the role of a possessed house help. Her performance in the movie shot her into the limelight and she has since gone on to act in about a 100 movies, becoming an A-list actress in the process. Major awards have followed and Mercy has been rewarded for her talents with a host of awards, most notably at the African Film Awards and the Africa Magic Viewers choice award.

She has even gone on to star in a song by rapper, Ice Prince, Aboki Remix, which also featured music heavyweights, Wizkid, M.I, Sarkodie and Khuli Chana.
Mercy got married to Prince Odianosen Okojie at Christ Embassy Church, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos on Saturday, August 27, 2011 and on December 30, 2012, the couple delivered a baby girl, Purity in United States of America.

True to character, the current news regarding Mercy is a controversial one, as Nollywood marketers are reportedly banning her from featuring in movies from next year, 2014, due to her alleged exorbitant fees and difficult-to-work-with attitude on set. Mercy is not one to shy away from controversy and she took to twitter to blast the promoters.
There is more to as regarding this latest development but the safe bet is that whatever the outcome, Mercy’s acting talent would still be enjoyed at the highest level for years to come.
