Designer Biography – Catherina Bortolussi And Francesca Rosset Of Kinabuti

Not many people go into fashion with a driven mindset pegged on ethics; Kinabuti stands out among fashion designers in this respect. According to its mission statement on the label’s website,“Kinabuti is an ethically driven Fashion Label inspired by a long-term vision for the Fashion Industry in Nigeria and Africa at large.”
Run by Italian duo comprising of Catherina Bortolussi, the creative director, and Francesca Rosset, they have in no time established themselves as a leading fashion brand.

Kinabuti makes dresses with creative, wide-ranging designs for women while alsoencouraging and supporting them through its many social empowerment programmes.Kinabuti has styled popular Nigerian entertainers like Darey Art Alade,Flavour and Julius Agwu in harem pants featured in the popular video, Sisi Eko.

 
The Kinabuti label debuted on the fashion scene with the release of its maiden Bicycle Thieves collection in 2002 with brightly colored, bold African prints. The collection which featured shots in the less privileged parts of the country as entrenched in their mission statement.

Inspired by African deserts and African Safari trends,Kinabuti recently showcased its 2013 Collection called the ‘Vlisco Carnival in The Desert’. The collection ranged frompersonalized hand printed silk fabricto khaki, tassels, pastels and bold geometric prints and patterns.

Spurred on by the need to give back to the community while juxtaposing it with amazing and creative designs, Kinabuti has over the years been credited with a lot of distinct and creative wears as well as discovering budding models from the South-South region of Nigeria. In conjunction with Nehemiah project, an extension of Kinabuti; Kinabuti Lab set out to address a project tagged ‘Rebuilding Lives’ which sought to use fashion as a means of creating awareness and alleviating the plights of the youths in underdeveloped communities.
