The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday was elected as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The President was appointed into the position during the 53rd session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Lome, the Togolese capital.
The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, revealed that the President did not put himself up for the post but promised to work to take ECOWAS to greater heights.
The President was quoted as saying:
“I am truly humbled and pledge to serve and work with my fellow Heads of State to deliver on peace, security, good governance and socio-economic development in the region.
I thank my colleagues for the Honor; they refused to take my ‘No’ for an answer. I would like to specially thank my predecessor, President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, for his excellent stewardship. And I look forward to hosting the next Meeting in Abuja in December”.
