“It Was A Very Emotional And Powerful Journey For Me”- Chiwetel Ejiofor On HOAYS

The movie which had a packed weekend of activities, first it was the press screening on that Friday, 11th April 2014 at the Silverbird Cinema in Victoria Island, Lagos and quickly followed by the press conference which held at the Wheatbaker Hotel in Ikoyi.

At the press conference lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor was joined by other cast members including OC Ukeje, Tina Mba, Gloria Young, Director of the movie Biyi Bandele and Producer Yewande Sadiku amongst others.

Unfortunately Anika Noni Rose, Joseph Mawle, Onyeka Onwenu, Genevieve Nnaji, Zack Orji, Wale Ojo, Andrea Calderwood and Thandie Newton were not present.

Journalists from media houses in Nigeria had the opportunity to ask all involved in the movie and present at the press conference questions.

The film, in which they play a couple, is adapted from the book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, set in Nigeria during the struggle to establish an independent republic.

Ejiofor, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in 12 Years A Slave, said the book and film held a personal significance.

He said: “It was incredible, I spoke to my grandfather a few years before he died. The conversation took a turn towards his experiences in the war and we ended up doing 10 hours of interviews about it.

“It very closely followed some of the events in this film so I was very moved and engaged to make this film.

“It was a very emotional and powerful journey for me.”

The 36 year old also spoke cleared the air on his Nationality, “I am Nigerian-British and even though I was born in the UK, I am proud of my Nigeria lineage” he said.

He was also asked about his excellent Nigerian-Igbo accent he brought to the movie and responded saying he is proud to have done a good job with his accent even though he is known to have a strong British one.

Half Of A Yellow Sun is released in cinemas in Nigeria on April 25.
