#EndSARS Protesters Storm National Assembly, Demand To See Lawmakers | #EndSWAT
#EndSARS movement on Thursday resumed with Abuja protesters storming the National Assembly and demanding to see the Senate President Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The protesters in their numbers marched to the complex displaying placards lamenting extra-judicial killings and demanding justice for victims of police brutality. In videos being shared on social media, they were seen renderinmg songs of solidarity, reciting the national anthem, and also chanting the slogans “EndSWAT!” “EndSWAT!”.
Security agents were also spotted forming a barricade at the entrance as they refused attempts by the Senate spokesman and Senate Committee Chairman on Police sent to address them. They, however, insisted on only being addressed by the President of the Senate.
Across the nation, there’ve been a week-long of staged protests against the harassment, extortion, and extrajudicial killings perpetrated by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.
The police authorities in response to the outcry of the protesters disbanded the SARS unit and announced the setting up of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit as its replacement but the protests and demonstrations have continued over complete police reforms.
