For weeks now, Nigerian youths have been relentless in the pursuit of an end to police brutality and police reform, while also seeking good governance.
Many public figures, both local and international, have been vocal during the protest, while many have called out the government to desist from using brute force on peaceful demonstrators.
Among them is Atedo Peterside, a Nigerian Nigerian entrepreneur, investment banker, and economist who joined in condemning the federal government’s actions. On Friday, in an interview with Arise TV, he speaks about the protest and the massacres which have not been attended to by the government.
According to the founder of Stanbic IBTC and Anap Foundation, he says five percent of the population in Nigeria is controlling the remaining 95 percent.
Peterside likened the technique to the divide and rule used by the colonial masters, advising youths to unite ahead of 2023 and find the silver lining from the Lekki incident that happened in Lekki on October 20.
Speaking on the ultimatum issued to Abuja protesters by a group called Indigenous People of Abuja, he said the briefing was most likely sponsored. The philanthropist also urged Nigerian youths to start mobilising to take over political power in 2023.
The former Cadbury Nigeria chairman rebuked the attacks and condoled the youths and the families of victims. He advised youths to use their numerical strength to get what they want legally. He cautioned the youths against divisive elements and urged them to be wary of thugs.
Furthermore, Peterside criticized the Thursday night speech of the President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that he should have made reference to all those who lost their lives and not handpicked cops who died on duty amid the civil unrest of the last few weeks.
He finally told social media influencers in the country to be cautious in their engagement with their followers. He challenged them to seek political knowledge and mentoring to lead their followers aright.
