Brymo, Chocolate City Go For Each Others Jugular In Latest Artiste-Label Battle

The stage seems set for what would be one of Nigerian music’s biggest ever battles between a musician and his record label / ex-label as the case may be, as ‘son of the carpenter’, Brymo and Chocolate City look ready to go all out to defend their interest in the latest artiste-record label feud to hit the industry.

The Nigerian music industry has experienced a lot of artiste-label feuds and as such, it was never a big surprise to hear that either an artiste or the label was not happy with the other. Still yet, we all still believed that some unions were so tightly held, they could never fall apart.

Contrary to that belief, we were all brought crashing down to earth when Mo Hits record split in early 2012, in evidently not amicable circumstances. As if that was the trigger, the months between that split and now have witnessed an unprecedented amount of artiste-label break ups and it seemed like it was only a question of who is next on the line.

As such, when Brymo followed Jesse Jagz in announcing an exit from Chocolate City, most music fans filed the development away as ‘one of the many’.

When the going was good

Since Brymo announced plans to and actually dropped his album Merchants, dealers and Slaves however, the guns have come out blazing from both camps, as the events of the last few weeks/days have however proved that this is one battle that both parties seem ready to fight to the last as evidenced by the court document shown above in addition to tweets from both parties (mostly Brymo), along with earlier press statements from both camps in the immediate aftermath of Brymo’s announcement, where Brymo said he wouldn’t go to the courts to seek justice because he believed he wouldn’t get justice and Chocolate City said that Brymo was contracted to them till 2016 and still owed them 2 albums.

Below, we bring you a timeline of Brymo’s tweets and MI’s reply to a fan.

We have definitely not heard the last of this issue but we hope whichever way the pendulum swings, it would not hinder us from listening to good music from Brymo as the young man is too talented not to be heard.
