The 2018 GTBank Fashion Weekend kicked off on Saturday 10th November with a series of master classes, the exhibition of Africa’s finest designers and some international designers who showcased their vibrant and electrifying designs on the runway.
Nigerian designer, Ituen Basi opened the show and did she impress, paying homage to Afrobeat by the late Fela. Her collection, which was a kaleidoscope of colours, featured a lot of fringes, bell-bottoms, ruffles and a bit of layering.
The collection felt like a proud display of culture. It was distinct in the design aesthetic and definitive in its messaging of pride, culture, African. It felt almost Afro-grunge in a way, perhaps creating something altogether new in fashion design language.
