Ikoyi Custodial Centre in Lagos is currently under attack as spate of violence continues in the metropolitan city on Thursday October 22.

The Ministry of Interior who confirmed the news on social media said policemen, NSCDC officials, Nigerian Correctional Service officers and soldiers were at the scene to put the situation under control.

“The situation at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre is under control! Armed squad of the @CorrectionsNg@CIVILDEFENDERS@PoliceNG and men of the Nigerian Army are providing security at the facility. @Fedfireng is dealing with the fire,” the ministry tweeted.

Although the reason for the attack was not disclosed, the ministry debunked the rumors that inmates escaped. “Ignore rumors of inmate escaping!”, they added.

Videos shared by eye-witnesses show smoke billowing from parts of the centre while inmates are seen running with sounds of sporadic gunshots in the background.

Lagos’ police public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who spoke to Punch, said the “cause of the fire could not yet be ascertained but policemen had been deployed in the prisons.”
