She grants OnoBello.com an exclusive interview, she talks about Music, Style, Dating and everything else! Find out who the real Cuppy is…

What is the most fun thing about being a DJ?

OnoBello.com

That has to be pleasing the crowd and making people feel good, Djing is so powerful!

DJ Cuppy

Who is your biggest musical influence?

OnoBello.com

So interesting… I can’t really pick one; I’m like a sponge, I’m constantly learning from things around me.

DJ Cuppy

DJing is quite competitive now. What influenced your decision to still pursue it?

OnoBello.com

It is, but I think it’s great to see so many DJ’s following their passion and getting the recognition that they deserve! For me, choosing to DJ was very much passion driven. When you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life!

DJ Cuppy

What would you have been if you weren’t a DJ?

OnoBello.com

I would maybe be a trader, I definitely see myself in a high-pressure environment- I’m always up for a challenge!

DJ Cuppy

What inspires you?

OnoBello.com

I love seeing other young people who are very happy and doing something totally different than what I’m doing. It inspires me to want to learn more about them.

Where do you see yourself in the near future?

OnoBello.com

I’m still on an experimental path, but whatever I settle for, in the future I hope to have made a difference, inspired others and changed the rules!

DJ Cuppy

Not so many people are used to having a female DJ. How do you intend to break through that perception and prove you’re worth their while?

OnoBello.com

Certainly, I think when you’re doing something new or different, challenges are inevitable. Sometimes people don’t like what they don’t know, but I hope that my talent will be able to speak for itself.

DJ Cuppy

You seem to have an amazing relationship with your mum & dad. Was it hard convincing your parents about being a DJ as opposed to pursuing a career in the corporate world?

OnoBello.com

I have the most supportive parents in the world… My parents are happy with me following my dreams, especially as I’ve recently graduated. I remember my dad saying to me- if you’re going to DJ, make sure you’re be the best DJ out there! Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

DJing is known as the first element of hip-hop culture. Does that affect the genres of music you work on?

OnoBello.com

Not at all, I play various genres, depending on my client. Naturally, I would say that I’m drawn to House and African music! But haven said that I’ve had sets with just 80’s music… Whatever gets the crowd going!

DJ Cuppy

Do you have a favorite genre?

OnoBello.com

It would have to be my style of playing- Afrobeats and House. A fusion of both that I call Neo-Afrobeats. My debut single, ‘I love my country’ and my new mixtape, ‘House of Cuppy’ are both great examples.

DJ Cuppy

Your red carpet style is simply fabulous. How do you get prepped? Do you have a personal stylist(s) or you select your pieces yourself?

OnoBello.com

Awww thank you! I have to thank Mama Cups for that!

DJ Cuppy

You seem to be very girlie as you are always seen in dresses, why is that? Do you think that makes you stand out in the male dominated DJ industry?

OnoBello.com

That’s such an interesting comment; you know I think it’s just me being me. That’s how I dress everyday in my life so that’s how I’ve decided to dress that way to work too! I wear dresses 365 days a year!

DJ Cuppy

What style trends appeal to you the most?

OnoBello.com

I love vibrant colors, hairpieces, and fashion jewelry… Always fun!

DJ Cuppy

What designers do you favour most?

OnoBello.com

I wear a lot of Topshop actually, also I love MSMG and Alice and Oliva. African designers such as Tiffany Amber and Ituen Basi I love too!

DJ Cuppy

What are the biggest challenges you have faced so far?

OnoBello.com

I think assumptions rooted from my personal life. It’s so easy for people to get distracted by the background stuff and forget to focus on what really matters; which is the music.

DJ Cuppy

Now you have released your mixed tape “House of Cuppy”, what’s next?

OnoBello.com

I would definitely say exciting projects… I’m looking forward to an even bigger and better version of ‘Cuppy’. I’d love be an advocate for African music and also African women around the world!

DJ Cuppy

Are you dating anyone? And what’s will be a perfect date for you?

OnoBello.com

I’m single… And will probably be forever and ever, Haha! I think I’m a bit too career driven to date anyone. But if I did, baking together would be fun… and getting proposed to at Disneyland ofcourse! Haha!
