Celebrity Focus: May D – The Rough Terrace To “Chapter One”

Most Nigerians first heard about Mayokun Awodumila aka Mr. May D when he featured on a couple of P-Square songs including the original version of “Chop My Money,” a lot of Nigerians got curious about the P-Square’s best kept secret and could not wait for his songs to hit the airwaves.

“Soundtrack,” May D’s first single came out with a spanking hot video, but the song was not convincing enough on the street and it failed to cement his credibility as the future of the industry. One thing was certain about the new act however, he has got a unique voice and he buttressed the point on the remix of “Chop My Money” where he was almost out doing P-Square and international act Akon.

On the eve of parting with the P-Square May D released “Ile Ijo” around the beginning of 2012 and followed up with a mild budget video which had a lot of energy to it as a result of the dance routine. “Ile Ijo” became critically acclaimed, and the botton-up-shirt-suit-and-tie brand gave way to the energetic ever dancing May D.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria to a family of seven, he’s currently enrolled in the university of Lagos studying Mass Communication. He started music by watching Michael Jackson as a kid, this explains the dance moves and the energy. May D’s career got a lift when he got signed on to Square Records and began featuring and releasing songs.

At the tail end of 2012, P-Square announced parting ways with May D due to ‘irreconcilable differences’ which later turned out to be because the negotiation and terms offered in the contract was not pleasurable to May D, according to Jude ‘Engees’ Okoye.

May D took a short hiatus and returned to the spotlight as an unaffiliated act under his own record label – Comfam Entertainment. His first song “Use Me,” an indirect jab at P-Square which eulogizes the ladies was not convincing enough, he followed with the video for “Gat Me High” and came back on the rise again.

With the release of “So Many Things” coupled with a spectacular video that alluded the blockbuster movie “Django,” there was no doubt to May D’S credibility any longer. It was time for the world to have a full dose of the ‘confam’ star, thus the album – “Chapter One.”

The album, which also features P-Square, debuted on the 10th of May 2013. He will also officially launch “Chapter One” with a Live Concert in Abuja on May 26 which will feature several of his industry friends including Davido, 2Face Idibia, Iyanya, Olamide, Jaywon, Reminisce, K-Switch and many more.
