Since starting her channel nine years ago, Jackie Aina has established herself as one of the most influential vloggers in the beauty industry. With over two million subscribers on YouTube, she’s always used her platform to not only share makeup reviews and tutorials, but also be an advocate for black women. If a major makeup brand fails to be inclusive, you bet she’ll say something.
Amidst recent controversy over makeup brands’ new foundation launches lacking deeper shades, Aina’s latest tutorial takes aim at people who claim she talks about race “too much.” To silence folks who argue they “don’t see color,” she did a makeup tutorial completely in black and white. It went as any makeup tutorial goes, with her applying foundation, concealer, mascara, the works.
Then, she did the big reveal:
“When you say stuff like ‘I don’t see color,’ you end up looking like this — silly as hell,” Aina said. “My problem is when people take that flawed thinking, that you just can ignore — why do you get to ignore all this chocolate? The cops don’t ignore my skin color.”
She then spoke to recent events in the makeup community, “Right now there’s a brand sending out statements to different media outlets saying that the reason why they didn’t create dark shades in their foundation line is because people tend to be more pale in the winter. I literally can’t make this up.”
Aina ended her video with a call to action. “I’m tired of being ignored. I have dark skin. I’m going to talk about it sometimes. If you don’t like it, watch someone else,” she continued. “When we celebrate each other’s differences and acknowledge them instead of pretending they’re not there, we actually get more accomplished.”
