The film star who is under attack for sexual misconduct accusations, avoided an awkward moment at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards by losing out to Gary Oldman in the best actor category. Franco, was nominated for his role in “The Disaster Artist.”
The star skipped the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in the wake of the controversy and missed the chance to pick up his trophy for his win there. Franco also won at the Golden Globe Awards weeks back, but the moment was tainted after several women accused him on Twitter of sexual misconduct.
The women called him out as a hypocrite because he attended the ceremony wearing a Time’s Up pin endorsing the movement aimed at ending abuse and harassment of women in and outside of Hollywood.
Franco was also criticized on the biggest stage over the weekend, during the Women’s March rally held on Saturday in Los Angeles that drew 500,000 participants where actress Scarlett Johansson began her speech with an attack on the 39-year-old Franco.
“How could a person publicly stand by an organization that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault while privately preying on people who have no power?” said Johansson, one of the 300 original signers of the Time’s Up letter. “I want my pin back, by the way.”
Speaking to E! News, Franco’s sister-in-law, Alison Brie said “I obviously support my family, and not everything that’s come forward is fully accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information. But of course now is the time for listening and that’s what we’re all trying to do.”
The star has however denied all the allegations.
Meanwhile, comedian Aziz Ansari who was also accused by a woman of aggressive sexual behaviour after he accepted a Golden Globe award while wearing a Time’s Up pin was not at the award ceremony.
Ansari was nominated for a SAG Award for best actor in a television comedy for his Netflix series “Master of None.”
Although the account by that woman — whose name wasn’t published — was interpreted by some as a bad date gone viral, the story put him on the defensive.
