In continuation of our daily match report from the 2014 Lagos International Polo Tournament, the 3rdday which was last Friday the 21st of February 2014 saw the first stage which has MTN and GTBank as major sponsors.
KKK were full of confidence heading into the match having defeated defending champions Kano Ibah 6½ -6 in the semifinal played a day earlier. Unity Polo on their part curtailed the hopes of Lagos Valkyrie with a 5-3 win in the semi-final.
Last year, Ibah claims the bragging right as they defeated Lagos Ericson 8-5 in the final.
With players like Tata Ali Kura, Nura Ibrahim, Farouk Ibrahim and Adamu Atta (KKK)facing challenges from Glory Ebano, Abdulkmumuni Musa, Hakeem Shagaya and Hassan Fayad (Unity), it was always going to be a close game and by the end of the opening chukka it was just a goal that separated the sides as Musa scored twice for Unity while Kura scored the goal for the visitors to end score at 2-1.
More fireworks were to be displayed in the second chukka as Musa scored his side’s third goal via a tap in but KKK won’t lie low as Nura Mansur reduced the deficit to just a goal to close the second chukka 3-2.
The third chukka also saw the sides going neck-in-neck but it was Shagaya’s goals, which was the fourth and fifth for the Lagos side that ensured victory despite Kura getting on the score at a point to make the score 4-3.
Lebanese Fayad, spurred by the shout of Killer, his nickname puts the icing on the cake as he scored the last goal of the encounter for an impressive 6-3 win which gives the Unity bank sponsored team the bragging right for the Dansa Foods sponsored cup.
More action was to be unfolded later as Lagos Fifth Chukker rallied to beat Shorelines in the Open Cup with Argentine Diego Whyte putting up a remarkable performance for the Chukkers who had trailed 6-5 some points in the fourth chukka in the five-chukka match.
