The Lagos State Government on Monday arraigned the Managing Director of Lekki Gardens Estate Limited, Mr. Richard Nyong, before a Lagos High Court in Igbosere for alleged involuntary manslaughter.
Nyong was arraigned on six counts alongside the company’s Executive Director, Mr. Sola Olumofe; the firm’s contractor, Odofin Henry Taiwo; Omolabake Mortune, Omotilewa Oluwatosin Joseph, Lekki Gardens, Get Too Rich Investment Limited and HC Insight Solution Limited.
The state, in the charge presented before Justice Sybil Nwaka, alleged that the defendants’ negligence resulted in the collapse of a six-storey building in the Lekki area of Lagos State on March 10, 2016, leading to the death of some persons.
Apart from the offence of involuntary manslaughter, the defendants were also accused of building without obtaining the permission and approval of the state.
The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who led the prosecution team, said the defendants acted contrary to Section 224 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and were liable to be punished under Section 229 of the same Act.
Kazeem said the defendants also violated Section 75 (1) of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of Lagos State 2010.
But when the charges were read to them, the defendants pleaded not guilty.
