Lagos State government said it has sacked no fewer than 42 health workers over negligence of duty, even as it sealed 160 hospitals and illegal pharmacies within the year under review. Meanwhile, the government yesterday disclosed that plans have been concluded to review the Mental Health Law of the state, to conform with current trends.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris and his Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) counterpart, Mrs. Lola Akande, made the disclosures during 2017 ministerial press briefing at the Secretariat, Ikeja. According to Idris; “We are set to review the mental health law in Lagos State. What we found out is that the National Mental Health, which is being used here is outdated, it is over 60 years.”

He added that the draft of the new mental law is currently receiving inputs at the state Ministry of Justice, noting 93 health professionals were trained on mental health at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to handle mental health issues at both local government councils and primary health care centers.

On dismissal of medical personnel, Idris said their action was against the Government efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the state. The commissioner assured residents of Lagos that the government would address all whatever challenges that may arise in any of its facilities.
