President of the Senate, David Mark, has cut short his participation in the Gold Tournament in Accra Ghana and returned home on learning of the death of the senator representing Delta Central, Pius Ewherido who died on Sunday of complications resulting from a domestic accident.
The former deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly died at the National Hospital, Abuja at the age of 50.
Confirming the death of the senator, Senate Spokesman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the passing away of the senator was a shock, but the Senate was awaiting further details of the death from the deceased’s family.
President Goodluck Jonathan in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati extended condolence to the deceased senator’s family and the entire Senate. He said he received with shock and sadness the news of the passing away of Senator Ewherido.
Also, The Delta State Government, in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Ovuozourie Macaulay, equally mourned the state ex-deputy speaker. The state said, “The Government of Delta State wish to commiserate with and express its deep condolences to the family at this trying moment. Government advises Deltans, particularly members of his constituency, to remain calm.”
David Mark in a statement on Sunday said he wept over the untimely death of Ewherido whom he described as a forthright and vibrant parliamentarian.
Mark said, “We have lost a true friend and colleague. We lost a vibrant and a very articulate senator. We have lost a patriotic Nigerian who stood to be counted when it mattered.”
