Ghanaian Born American Menswear Designer, Afriyie Poku Oberima Unveils Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection

West African born and American bred designer Afriyie Poku puts his own unique and refined take on classic men’s pieces. Largely influenced by the clean cuts of Ozwald Boateng and Ralph Lauren, Poku began tailoring his own clothes with the guidance of his Ghanaian mother. With this skill under his belt, Poku entered a period in his life where the distinction between men and boys became of the essence.

Unveiling the photos from his latest collection, Oberima Afriye puts exquisite attention to fine detail and creates pieces that are edgy, sexy, masculine, and versatile. The O.A brand approaches every design by creating a character that is defined by Poku’s philosophy of “the Gentleman.” His philosophy rests upon the belief that there is a Gentleman in all of us. That Gentleman knows who they are and embraces it. For within the house of Oberima Afriyie, there is no distinction between the man in the business suit and the man in the biker jacket. This is because every individual depicts different qualities that attribute to the idea of “the Gentleman.” Here, all characters are welcome.

A storyteller by nature, Poku approaches each design as if it was the creation of a tale, weaving together storylines and pieces that remain inherently masculine, but are refreshingly inspired by the cityscape around him. In the process, he has created a line that is all at once, modern, sophisticated, and pays homage to the designs of centuries past.
