Music For The Weekend – Keeping It Old Skool

Friday, and it is time to finally kick off work shoes and sink your feet deep inside warm scented water and pamper yourself. Yes, it’s the weekend again and there’s no better way to unwind than with music.

I know that I can definitely not be the only music lover and enthusiast so I always make it my responsibility to reach out to other music crazed people with specially selected themes and songs for the weekend.

Last weekend featured majorly songs by Fela and Femi Kuti to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence as well as the birthday of the Afrobeat king. Dusting off my brain cells for old songs made me remember some songs that were the best of the best back in the day, hence the Old Skool theme for this weekend.

Going through songs between early 90’s to the early millennium had me laughing, and listening to those songs again, well, I just couldn’t stop myself from remembering fun memories. I hope it’s the same for you, so I have selected 5 songs that I think people can be familiar with.

Music is therapy, so whether you are at home or at one of the events featured on our What’s Popping This Weekend Segment (browse the site to know), be sure to have music wash though your thoughts and help you relax.

Cheers to the weekend!

Plantashun Boiz – You And I

Plantashun Boiz was Nigeria’s BoyzIIMen and when they split up in 2004 it was a heartbreaking moment. One of their key songs was ‘You and I’ off their Body and Soul album. Hopefully there would be a reunion of the group even if it’s just for one more single.

Remedies – Omode Meta N’Sere

Remedies was one of the only Hip hop groups back in the late 1990s/early 2000. There was Tony Tetuila, Idris Abdulkareem and Eddy Remedy. ‘Omode Meta N’sere’ is only one out of there many songs that left their fans two-stepping and coming up with unique dance steps.

Lagbaja – Konko Below

Ok, Konko Below is not as old skool as the other songs and it was released in early 2005. But this song remains one of the songs by Lagbaja, who is an old skool artiste, which makes you move and is danceable. People are still singing this song and using the beat to make other songs.
