The killer truck
The terrorist gunman who killed at least 84 people 10 of which were children, and left scores injured after he ploughed a 25-tonne truck loaded with guns and hand grenades through the crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city of Nice yesterday night (read here if you missed),has been identified by Nice Matin as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a 31-year-old French Tunisian.
The killer, who went on a mile-long killing spree by mounting pavements at high speed running dozens of revelers down, then got out of the truck and started spraying those who were fleeing.
He was shot dead by the police after his 30-minutes rampage, which left about 54 children injured. Bouhlel had reportedly been in trouble with the police in the past for petty crime but wasn’t on the watch list of radicalized young men.
ISIS supporters have been celebrating the attack, which was carried out to coincide with France’s most important national holiday, on social media. This is the third major attack on France in the past 18 months.
About 50 victims are said to be “between life and death” in hospitals.
Meanwhile France has declared a 3-day national morning period as President Francois Hollande vowed to hit ISIS in Syria and Iraq even “harder” in retaliation.
“France is in tears, it is hurting but it is strong and she will be stronger – always stronger than the fanatics who wish to hurt us,” he said.
