Nigeria Reacts As Buhari Approves $1.96 Billion Northern Rail Project

Nigerians have taken to social media to criticize President Muhammadu Buhari-led government after it was revealed that a contract worth $1.96 billion has been approved for the development of proposed Kano rail line to Niger Republic and Dutse, the capital of Jigawa.

According to Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, the approval was given at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday September 23.


He said the proposed rail line from Kano state to Maradi, the second largest citiy in Niger Republic was going to cover a track length of 248 kilometres and will pass through seven senatorial districts in the North.

The Minister also said apart from that, the council also approved the award of a contract worth N3.049bn for the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of one railway crane for the purpose of clearing rail tracks in situations of accidents.

However, the report has drawn a lot of online criticisms, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and several civil rights groups as they condemn Buhari’s administration. See few reactions below:
