Omawumi can be described as an energetic, intelligent and extremely talented vocalist. Born on April 13th to late Dr F. Megbele and Mrs Aya Megbele, she had her primary and secondary education in Warri, Delta State. While growing up, she was the lead vocalist in the children’s choir of Four Square Gospel Church in Warri.
Omawumi studied Law at Ambrose Alli University in Edo State. After graduating in 2005, she moved to Port Harcourt where she worked in her brothers’ law firm, O.S Megbele and Associates while also studying French at Alliance Franciase.
In 2007, she auditioned for Idols West Africa and on January 26th, 2007 with her strong voice and dazzling personality she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the continent to emerge the 1st runner up at the competition.
A year later she released her long awaited debut single ‘In The Music’. The song became an instant hit; climbing to number one on numerous charts across the country. The single got her multiple nominations and awards including ‘Next Rated’, an award given by HipHop World that came with a KIA Optima car.
2009 gave birth to her first album ‘Wonderwoman’, the album featured hit songs like ‘Ma Fi Mi Shere’ featuring Eldee, ‘Thank God’ featuring Da grin, ‘Today na Today and a lot more. This album further shot Omawumi into limelight; a star has truly been discovered.
Since being in the industry this multi talented beauty with a spectacular voice has won various awards: In 2009, she won HipHop World Awards Best Female Vocalist; Best Female Music Video 2010 from NEA; Best R’N’B/Pop Artiste 2012 from NEA and a host of other accolades.
She is not only a singer/songwriter; she is also MC Extraordinaire as she has hosted many events successfully, one of which was NEA 2010 in New York City. She is also set to host the Headies 2012 alongside MI. This award winning diva is responsible for hit theme songs for major corporations like Malta Guinness, MTN and Mortein.
After the huge success of her debut album that came close to winning Best Album of the Year 2010 at the NEA, the songbird has returned to the studio to work on her forthcoming album. She has already released two singles this year that have been getting a lot of radio play; ‘If You Ask Me’ and ‘Bottom Belle’
Omawumi is a diversity of talents; with her spectacular voice it is safe to tag her ‘the Mariah Carey’ of Nigeria.
