While the COVID-19 pandemic may have put a damper on this year’s Independence Day festivities, our favorite celebrities still found (socially-distanced) ways to enjoy the holiday weekend — and look good while doing so.
Although the October 1st celebrations were filled with messages and reminders to reflect on the country’s past to improve the future, we we’re treated to limitless creativity from celebrities to ordinary citizens.
Below, see how stars including BBNaija stars Wathoni & Erica, Jemima Osunde, DJ Cuppy are enjoying their Independence Day celebrations.
The 2020 Big Brother Naija star looked effortless in a stunning green dress that fetaured a slit and train. She wrote, “As we celebrate Nigeria at 60 today let’s remember that change begins with us. Let’s not lose hope of the fact that one day and I pray it comes soon enough, the Nigerian system will one way or the other be on our side in terms of jobs, infrastructure, health and so on.
“Meanwhile today let’s do something for our county 🙏🏾. It can be as little as saying no to littering 😉. It constantly feels like we are not where we should be at all but let’s appreciate the baby steps still. We can make this happen my people. Happy Independence Day Nigeria.”
In celebration of the country’s diamond jubilee, the contoversial fashion designer almost broke the internet with photos of herself posing nude with a giant green flower.
She captioned them: ‘Happy Independence Day to Nigeria that’s nothing to write home About, But we will continue to strive and break boundaries internationally for our nation, open doors the Government couldn’t open for us for the youths, Not cause it’s our duty, But for the future, our kids Are the future. Hopefully one day our voice will be heard.’
The reality TV star and actress looked sophisticated in her Lisa Folawiyo print suit on Instagram as she celebrated the country, writing, “Happy Independence Day Nigeria 🇳🇬”
The BBNaija star rocked her traditional attire in a beautiful shade of green to mark the country;’s 60th Independence day. “As a true Delta State Queen, and a Nigerian to the roots, I celebrate with my Motherland, the true giant of Africa, my beloved country, NIGERIA,” she wrote alongside the photos.
She added, “A land flowing with milk and honey and a lot of untapped resources.
A land filled with with a vibrant youth population and so much talent yet to be discovered.
Nigeria, my beautiful Motherland, you have shaped me into who I am through different experiences, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. You have brought the best out of me and I will forever be proud of you. I will fly your flag all across the globe and live in Peace & Unity with all men.
The sweat and blood of our founding fathers. The trials and travails of our heroes past
The pain and agony of all those who paved way for us have become the fuel that powers our passion.
God Bless Delta State, the BIG HEART of the Nation
God Bless the Federal Republic of NIGERIA!!! HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY MOTHERLAND!!!🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬 #naija@60″
Kate “Ka3na” Jones
Attending La Mode magazine’s annual Green October event, the BBNaija star who was invited as an Award Presenter definitely looked the part.
The TV presenter and stylist took a moment to reflect returning to Nigeria and how the experience has been ever since.
He wrote, “I returned to Nigeria excited and it didn’t make sense to many people. In fact, many people told me that my excitement would soon get lost in the midst of Lagos gridlock traffic, at the very least.
“It’s been five years & I am still so excited about this nation. Not because I never got stuck in traffic or got tired of the power situation or had to deal with some mediocre minded individuals or got frustrated with the policies & systems in place.
“I am still so excited because of things I have CHOSEN to let my heart believe Because I CHOSE to let my eyes see Nigeria the way Father God sees him…WHOLE. COMPLETE. RIGHTEOUS. BEAUTIFUL. FRUITFUL. LOVING.
“With those words like a tune stuck in my mind, I arise each day, walking in purpose. Doing my part. Taking a step at a time, knowing that, if each individual in Nigeria fulfilled their God-ordained purpose, then Nigeria is truly the greatest nation on earth.
So take a step each day. Happy 60th Independence Day, Nigeria!”
Taking to Instagram, the actress looked gorgeous in her Independence Day-themed portrait. She also used the opportunity to advise everyone on how to stay safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Happy Independence Day my darlings 🇳🇬! 60 whole years! We might be far from where we want to be but we are on our way… We will keep striving and we will get there together,” she wrote. Adding, “Don’t forget Covid-19 is still here, so you know the drill. Wear a mask, wash your hands, take your vitamins and maintain the distance. 💜💐”
The disc jockey and music producer went parotic by donning a stripped dress that matched the flag she was holding. “Happy Independence Day, may Naija never carry last IJN! 🇳🇬,” she captioned the shot.
The Nollywood starlet alongside few creatives came together to celebrate the country at 60 with an inspiring short movie titled “G.R.O.W.T.H”.

G.R.O.W.T.H Growth Is A Gradual Development In Maturity. Today as Nigeria celebrates her 60th anniversary, we all can agree that there’s a lot more our dear country should have attained that’s still sadly a far cry away. Instead, we want every Nigerian to reflect and appreciate their personal growth. Every Choice And Every Mistake Has Contributed To This Growth. A Lot Of Times We Don’t See It But When We Look Back, We See That We Have Really Come A Long Way. Everybody’s Process Is Different And We Can Only Hope Our Result Does Justice To Our Story. Trish Onumonu The fashion designer went all out opting for fabulous green dresses. She says, “TrishO brand is a brand with outstanding heritage. As we celebrate Nigeria today, we should restructure our attitude from the way we do things, to the way things need to be done. Let’s say no to corruption. United as one, we can change everything we don’t like in Nigeria. By working together and striving hard, our good hope and plans will come to reality. As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of our independence, I encourage all Nigerians to keep hope alive. Let us believe that Nigeria will continue to get better. Let us make efforts in our own little ways to make Nigeria great. It is our collective efforts that would make Nigeria great and we must make it happen. Nigeria is our Jerusalem, let us join hands to move it forward. It is true some of our leaders have failed us, let us not fail ourselves and those that are coming behind us. Let us contribute our quota to the progress and development of Nigeria and believe that the lost glory of Nigeria will be restored. I congratulate all Nigerians for witnessing the 60th anniversary of our independence and pray that the good of Nigeria shall be our portion in Jesus name. Amen.
