The year 2013 birthed the rise of a new generation of actors and actresses in the Nigerian movie industry, a.k.a Nollywood and also a refinement of the acts of some existing big names.

Quite notably, the new generation showed they could hold their own in lead roles and managed to steal some of the headlines and spotlights reserved for the hitherto ‘untouchable’ A-list acts, while we also saw more acts join the league of producers and directors.

These developments have set us up for a 2014 to look forward to and we at OnoBello.com have compiled a list of Nollywood actors and actresses to watch out for this year.

1. O.C Ukeje

O.C Ukeje has been around since he won the Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO) reality TV show and has been regarded as a talented actor but had never really made a big splash until 2013.

Nominations in ‘Best Actor’ categories by 10 major award bodies (a Nollywood first) and 8 major award wins in 2013 have certainly given O.C a higher rating and surely, the juiciest roles would come his way in 2014.

2. Funke Akindele

Judging by the enormous success Funke Akindele achieved in the between 2008 and 2012 most notably with her ‘Jenifa’ movie, 2013 was a relatively quiet year for the massively talented actress who made her on-screen debut as Bisi in the HIV/AIDS awareness sitcom, I Need To Know.

However, with a fourth installment of the ‘Jenifa’ movie series billed to drop in 2014 and with the behind-the-scene shots of movies she has shot with Nkem Owoh, Mercy Johnson, Aki and Paw Paw amongst others surfacing, Funke is surely going to hold us spellbound again in 2014.

3. Damilola Adegbite

Thelima Duke, the character Damilola played on Tinsel charmed and wowed her way through life on the series and the embodiment of that character is still doing so to fans in real life.

Damilola made the shock decision to leave Tinsel in 2012 to concentrate on the other aspects of her career and that has certainly paid off as the incredible beauty finally started making headway in Nollywood, getting rave views for her role in Flower Girl and gracing the covers of not-a-few magazines.

Movie buffs always welcome new beauties with equally delightful acting skills with open arms and that should extend to Damilola in 2014.

4. Kemi Lala Akindoju

The actress had a good year, starring in the Charles Novia directed ‘Alan Poza’ alongside O.C. Ukeje, and in yet-to-be-released ‘Dazzling Mirage’ directed by veteran director/producer Tunde Kelani. Akindoju is one of the actresses to watch out for next year.

5. Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan is not as highly-revered for his acting as for his directing and production skills probably because the strength of the latter strongly overweighs the on-screen skills of the movie genius and it is his off-screen abilities that would keep us glued to out cinema and TV screens in 2014.

Most notable of his upcoming works is the delayed and still yet-to-be-released film, October First, which reportedly cost over N100 million and has started winning awards even before its premiere date.

‘October First’ was filmed in 2013 and features Afolayan himself, Sadiq Daba, Deola Sagoe, Ibrahim Chatta, David Bailey, Kehinde Bankole and many others.
