An Associated Airlines plane with registration number 5NBJY has crashed moments after take-off from the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos.
According to a spokesman for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, the plane was bound for Akure and is believed to have been conveying some members of the family of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu along with his body to Akure for the burial which was previously slated for tomorrow. The spokesman said the engine of the about 30-seater plane failed and it crash-landed and burst into flames. Another source explains that the pilot of the aircraft tried to return to the airport but the plane crashed about 800 metres away.
According to Rasaki Rhakod who runs a car service around the airport, “There’s a lot of smoke coming from the runway, but we can’t get access to it, though fire-fighters are rushing to the scene.”
CNN reports that 11 people have been confirmed dead.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with the bodies of nine victims having been recovered, while the casket bearing the remains of the late Governor has also been recovered.
Also, the two black boxes of the aircraft have been recovered by the Accident Investigation Bureau.
