Ono’s Diary: “Run For A Cure” 8Km Charity Walk To Create Awareness For Breast, Cervical & Childhood Cancer

On Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 7am I was at Astro Turf in Ikoyi for the “Run For A Cure” 8Km charity walk to create awareness for breast, cervical & childhood cancer.

“Cancer is a disease that claims the lives of millions of men, women and children worldwide. Many types of cancers are treatable if they are detected in time. Globally great strides have been made in the fight against cancer through research, creating awareness, early detection and aggressive treatment of the disease”.

“Unfortunately for the majority of Nigerians, early detection is not a luxury they can afford. Too many Nigerians are losing their battle with cancer because of late detection or the disease is not detected at all. We believe that this can be changed”.

In toll for the run was my cute dog Coco, in fact he stole the show and got all the attention, I think probably the first time a dog joined in raising cancer awareness.

It felt great to do this! My friend Lara Rawa who invited me, Coco and I all had fun doing the run/walk/stroll from Astro Turf to Falomo roundabout in Ikoyi and back. And I met some lovely people there too.

Prizes were given to the fastest runners in both male and female categories, but for most people it is not about winning, it’s all for a good cause, creating awareness and finding a cure.

If you weren’t there, it will be good to join in next year.
