The 2014 Lagos International Polo Tournament will officially get underway at the legendary Ribadu Road Lagos Polo Club, Ikoyi, on Wednesday with nine trophies at stake.

The tournament is divided into two weeks where teams will compete for the Dansa Cup and Open Cup in the first week which runs from February 19-23.The Beginners Cup, Oba of Lagos Cup and the Open final will also be decided in the opening week while the second week which runs from February 26-March 2 will see teams battle for the Independence Cup, Beginners Cup, Low Cup, Lagos Governor’s Cup and the prestigious Majekodunmi Cup.

The tournament has MTN and GTB as major sponsors while Veuve Clicquot, Union Bank, Chapel Hill, UBS, Caverton Group, Dansa Foods Ltd/Dangote, Southern Sun Hotel, Smooth FM, Beat FM, Delaney and Avlon Group are also sponsoring the event which is about the biggest in the calendar of the Nigeria Polo Federatrion.

The tournament will gallop off with matches between Lagos Bonhams and Lagos Valkyrie in the Stream A of the eight-team Dansa Cup while Lagos Sao Paolo will confront either Unity Polo or Badboys who will square off in a qualifying match of Stream A of the same cup. The first set of matches in stream a will be concluded when Ibadan A battle Kano Titans/Ibah in game 3 while the day’s schedule of matches will be rounded off by the Stream B clash between Kano Tripple K and Ibadan B.

Six Lagos teams will battle in the Open up which begins on Thursday with the clash between Lagos Ashbert  98.1 and Lagos Kashton/Lintex will  while another Open Cup match will see Lagos Ironclad/Taleveras size-up Lagos Shoreline. Lagos Fifth Chukker and Lagos Kashton Lintex complete the team for the Open Cup.

The second week, which has a tradition to get turbo-charged will see Lagos Petrosmith, Lagos Goodfellow,Lagos Raven Rojo and Ibadan 1A  jostling for honours in the Low Cup while in stream B, Kano Susplan/Titans, Kano Aitek, Ibadan 2A and Lagos HST will battle for a top-two finish that will earn them a semi-final ticket.

Kano Titans and Lagos Ironclad/Fifth Chukker are in Stream A of the four-team Majekodunmi Cup while Kano Keffy Ponies and Lagos Auden/Delaney will compete in Stream B.

The Deputy Tournament Manager, Seyi Oyinlola, said the tournament will feature an improved format different from last year’s. “There are different sponsors responsible for different aspect of the tournament. There’ll be an improved quality of the social events after the competition because we’re expecting about 3,000 guests,” Oyinlola said.

GTBank’s Head of Media, Jide Sipe, said sponsoring the competition was part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility.  “Last year’s event was the first for GTBank but it gave us the opportunity to interact with stakeholders in the sport and also to reach out to our target audience,” he said.

MTN Event and Sponsorship Manager, Dolapo Durojaiye on his part said Polo enthusiasts should look forward to the best of polo which has been the reason why the telecommunication firm sustained its sponsorship of the tournament.
