PR Consultant, Stylist and contributor for Cosmopolitan UK reviews beauty brand Maybelline’s Spring/Summer 2015 ‘Rebel Bouquet’ collection made up ofsensational lipsticks and nail polishes.
Here’s her review in the magazine fronted by supermodel Jourdan Dunn below:
“Having met Jourdan Dunn a few times and most recently in the Maybelline Lounge during London Fashion week this February, I was looking forward to reviewing the new makeup range she fronts for Spring/Summer 2015. Of course, she looks amazing in the pictures, but I wanted to know if all the colours would suit darker skin tones, like I’d hope.
Maybelline’s ‘Rebel Bouquet’ collection of punky pastel shades includes 4 Color Sensational lipsticks and 4 Color Show nail polishes. The lippies come with transparent packaging (each tube matches the colours), which helps with identifying the different shades if you’re a hoarder like me.
- Ravishing Rose: A classic subtly dusty pink rose colour, which is Jourdan’sfavourite shade. The pigment (as with all Maybelline lipsticks) is really good and the texture is creamy and smooth, containing moisturising properties that make the shade look a bit richer. Comfortable to wear and long-lasting without drying my lips. Good start.
- Petal Pink: This floral pink shade needs to be worn with a lip liner as the colour made my lips look clownish without the borders a lip pencil provides. Most ladies of colour find pink lipstick tricky to wear and I struggled with this. I would advice one light layer, or mixing this shade with another colour to tone-down the vibrancy a notch depending on your skin tone. The luminous finish would look good on skin with a cool undertone. Again, my lips felt quite moisturised.
- Power Peony: Though I’m not a fan of pink lipsticks, I would wear this shade again as it feels very youthful and is a perfect color for the Spring. I would also consider mixing this shade of pink with Peach Poppy (below) to get a more pastel-nude effect of my own.
- Peach Poppy: This was my favourite shade and of all the colours this screams Spring to me. I had to apply a few times to get the desired effect but I would definitely recommend this shade to anyone with dark skin who’s looking for a cool pastel shade to wear this season.
All in all, the lipsticks (£6.99 each) are great but I don’t think all the shades are perfectly suited to black/ethnic skin tones like Jourdan’s and mine. If you enjoy mixing and matching lipsticks to come up with bespoke shades like I do, you can easily do this with the Rebel Bouquet collection as all the colours compliment each other well.
The nail polishes
I love all the nail varnishes except the Glitter topcoat, as personally I’m not a fan of glittery nails. The other 4 shades are playful and pack a punch.
They dry quite quickly which is handy for me as I’m never patient enough to let my paint job dry properly! The brush is flat and wide: perfect for quick and easy application and the texture of the varnish is quite fluid and glides on the nails easily. For the affordable prices (£3.99 each), they are of excellent quality.”
