Cynthia Nixon—aka Miranda—has already made a lasting impression on her home state as the dryly delightful lawyer on Sex and the City. (Most recently she was in the news for backing Sarah Jessica Parker in the Carrie v. Samantha feud.) But since then, she’s become a progressive activist, and is now moving into politics by running for governor.
Nixon made the official announcement Monday afternoon on Twitter, posting an official campaign video that featured her wife, Christine Marinoni, and their son, Max. “New York is my home. I’ve never lived anywhere else,” Nixon says. “I’m a proud public school graduate, and an even prouder public school parent. I was given chances I just don’t see for most of New York’s kids today.”

She will be running as a primary challenger to Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is also a Democrat. On her website, Nixon calls out Cuomo’s management of the MTA, which operates New York City’s public transportation, along with other issues like education funding and tax breaks for corporations.
