Like a breath of fresh air fashion stylist Tayo Shonekan’s new collection called Mama’s Garden from her Aimas label is much needed in the Nigerian fashion scene now more than ever.
Shonekan, a well known figure in the Nigerian fashion industry launched her Aimas label in Nigeria back in 2007, though she had previously started designing in 2004 while living in the United Kingdom where she studied Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Coventry University. After her studiesshe decided to go down the path of fashion styling and designing as it was something that came naturally to her. She however took on short courses courses in fashion design, accessories and graphic to improve on her natural talent.
Shonekan has styled for African magazines including True Love, Elan, Genevieve and Today’s woman. She currently works as the Fashion Director at FAB magazine.
Her vast portfolio includes styling lookbooks designer brands including Lanre Da Siva Ajayi and Zebra. Styling famous people is one of her many forte's. She has styled the famous literary writer Chimamanda Adichie, singers Nneka, Sasha P, Mo’ Cheddah’s and Ikechukwu. She’s also worked with established corporate brands and is responsible for Glo telecommunications company’s recent billboard adverts with Nigeria celebrities Ini Edo, Rita Dominic and P-Square.
Shonekan’s new Mama’s Garden collection was inspired by flowers in her mother’s garden. It has a floral and African theme running through the pieces. The range includes handmade T-shirts are jazzed up with colourful embellishments of sequins, pearls and beads. Distinct designs have been cut out from aso-oke, george, lace and raw silk fabrics. Other accessories such as handbags, belts, bib necklaces and hair accessories have been mixed with Ankara prints to make them stand out. The entire collection evokes a playful, quirky and the girl-next-door look and feel and features bold girly colours from bold fuchsia and red to cool pastels of moss green and baby pink. Every piece is handmade locally in Nigeria by the best craftsmen.
According to Shonekan, the label “was born out of a love for celebrating one’s individuality and being able to express oneself through fashion, which I am able to do this effortlessly through my designs and personal style, my vision is to become a unique and contemporary brand providing an eclectic mix of clothing and accessories, which will extend to men, children and home”.
