Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi (LDA) is the eponymous self-named design label of fashion designer Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi. Founded in 2005, the fashion label fuses Victorian and contemporary architecture to make 40’s inspired English wear relevant and practical for today’s discerning, stylish and avant-garde woman
In six years LDA’s passion for fashion has only gotten stronger making the label a fashion favourite among the media, celebrities and fashion lovers.
The label first arrived in the fashion world in 2005 with iconic 1940’s couture signature designs, the result of what is today a full-blown fashion house. Regardless of the label’s strong historical design roots, LDA creatively combines pattern, print, exquisite and even traditional fabrics to produce day wear, evening wear, gowns and cocktail dresses that bridge time and make the label successful within and outside Nigeria. Today, the label’s collection includes couture, ready-to-wear, hairpieces and jewellery.
The LDA’s woman is the personification of sophistication, femininity, brilliance and boldness, which are the inspiration for each of her collections. LDA states “Couture, colour and boldness with an edgy twist are the signature of my designs ”.
For her contributions to the Nigerian and African fashion industry, Lanre has received numerous accolades and awards for excellence.
Her pieces have grace glossy magazine covers and editorials and she has showcased collections locally in Nigeria and internationally at the Arise Africa Rising Festival (October 2008), Arise Africa Fashion Festival, South Africa (June 2009) and the New York Fashion Week (September 2009). She has also created three different collections for internationalDutch wax print giant, Vlisco.
In 2009, the first flagship boutique was launched in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Lanre’s academic qualifications include a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Coventry University and a Masters degree in Finance from University of Leicester. She is married with two children.
LDA is showing at the Arise Magazine Fashion Week (AMFW) Lagos 2011 on Saturday 12th March, 2pm at the Thisday Tent, Federal Palace Hotel on Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island. The fashion team at www.onobello.com got a preview into the latest collectionthemed‘The Modern Age’, and the entire collection absolutely blew us away. For this collection, LDA has infused the fantasies of images and emotions of fashion that are sculpted from the things in our daily lives. Her is creativity isclearly inspired by history, art, cities and daily experiences. Still rooted in 1940’s English couture, LDA has however evolved and reinvented herself every season.
She has merged her signature 1940’s couture with the core of modernity to bring about contemporary feminine pieces. The use of vibrant colours, textures, cuts and shapes are on show and they are true to our African heritage in the 21st century.
According to the designer“I have made the woman’s figure the utmost priority in the making of the pieces as they have the vibrancy of a confident and intelligent woman; dresses, shorts, cat suits, skirts, jump suits, harem trousers and blouses that are cut to accentuate the best parts of a woman’s body in uneven hems and delicate use of trimmings to accentuate parts of the body and bring about a contrast of the 40’s and modern day”.
Her choice of colours is perfect to carry the message far into this century. Grey, khaki and black contrast other colours of blue, gold, purple, floral prints and abundant use of sequins. The fabrics also add to the perfection and take the female form. Laces, duchess silk and satin are the fabrics that have been carefully hand picked to translate the message of the collection.
LDA knows how to play with colours and fabrics that focuses on the feminine silhouette; figure-hugging blouses and dresses elongate the female form, long dresses give an illusion of a mermaid line, mini dresses, skirts, harem trousers and cat suits…
In a tactical way, she daringly uses bold shapes and colours to create sensuality of women in this Fall 2011 collection comprising of 30 looks for the ‘ARISE Magazine Fashion Week Lagos’. This affirms the modern sophistication and sexy nature that has become LDA’s signature. We cannot wait to see the clothes come alive on the catwalk as this is definitely LDA at her best.
In anticipation, here’s bringing you a sneak peak to ‘The Modern Age’ and collections from past to present, which is your favourite from all of them?
