Rape is a serious issue! Which is why when somebody makes an accusation of being raped it should be taken seriously. And considering that we live in a society where victims of rape are more often than not, blamed or asked to sweep it under the carpets, it is rather brave for someone to speak up when they have been through such hell.
So, all through yesterday and even today, Nigerian Twitter and blogosphere have been awash with the story of a 26-year-old blogger and illustrator, Lotanna –better known by her moniker, Sugabelly – making some really heavy allegations of being raped by a son of the late former governor of Kogi State, Prince Audu Abubakar.
According to Lotanna, she had met the young man who goes by the name, Mustapha when she was just a 17-year-old intern at a tech company in Abuja. What followed was a very toxic and abusive relationship which involved the young man and a few of his friends gang-raping her and what not.
You can read Sugabelly’s full account of her ordeal on her blog
Ever since her story broke out on twitter, tons of people including Oby Ezekwesili, Funmi Iyanda, Abike Dabiri and more have rallied around her, showing their support and willingness to fight for her.
We can only hope that in a country where only 18 rape convictions have been recorded in her legal history, perpetrators of this crime, if found guilty, will be brought to book and that hopefully more victims will be encouraged to speak up!
