Earlier in the week, news broke out that one James Onuoha, a staff of Exonn Mobil had allegedly raped a 14-year old girl, a niece of his tenant after which he left her with N1, 000 to console her.
We received an email from the Women Association of The Good People, the email reads:
“On Monday the 4th of Jan 2015, Mr. James Ikenna Onuoha who works With Exonn Mobil and who is also a landlord of a property on the island raped a 14 year old who happened to be the niece of his tenant.
Mr. Ikenna Onuoha decided to visit the homes of his tenants who had advised him earlier that they wouldn’t be at home. The only the 14 year old niece and their 3 year old daughter would be home on that faithful day.
The knocked on their flat and was attended to by the 14 year old who told the landlord her Uncle and Aunty weren’t home. Mr. Ikenna Onuoha insisted on entering the home of his tenants, to wait for them. The naive 14-year-old girl who had only been in Lagos for 3weeks, opened the door and let Mr. Ikenna Onuoha in.
According to the victim he checked the visitor’s toilet to be sure that there was indeed no one at home as his tenants apparently owed him rent.
He went inside the room, checked the wardrobe and the bathroom, not finding anything he then started talking to the 14 year old, asking her details of her name and age. Mr. Ikenna Onuoha, who is meant to be a responsible citizen performed a dastardly act and pushed the young girl her on the bed and while she tried to scream he covered her mouth and forcefully had his way with her…in presence of the 3 year old!
In a bid to console her, he offered her N1, 000 and left.
Her aunty came home and met the young 14-year-old girl hysterical and inconsolable. After asking her repeatedly as to what happened and the girl being unable to answer, to everyone’s amazement, it was the 3 year old daughter who recounted the story to the mom “Mummy landlord came, he push Aunty C on the bed and he do like this like this on top her” describing to her mum and innocently recreating the movements she saw.
This was obviously distressing to the woman who called her husband who rushed home and reported to the police station in Lamgbasa. The police asked for medical report, which they got the next morning. The doctor’s report did confirm she was “forcefully penetrated “; the doctor on his own accord flagged the human rights office.
However till date despite contact being made with Mr. Onuoha, police knowledge and his employer’s knowledge of the serious allegation this man has not been apprehended.
As of yesterday 8th January he failed to report to the police station at 9am as he had promised instead he called he victim’s family (his tenants) repeatedly and tried to convince them to meet. His calls prior to this were threats to evict them.
We are concerned citizens saddened by the state of affairs, in which numerous bodies are aware of this serious matter and the suspect is yet to be apprehended.
We feel we have no choice but to release this information to the public in the hope that the case gets the necessary attention it deserves and that the perpetrator is brought to justice.
We hope this also deters other closet pedophiles from committing such a disgusting act against women and children.”
Upon investigations by the police, and a medical examiner, evidence of forceful penetration, bruises and semen were found on the young girl. Exxon Mobile was said to have intervened leading to the arrest of Onuoha.
Yesterday, the accused was arraigned in front of an Igbosere Magistrate’s court on 4 counts of rape and indecent assault and was granted bail in the sum of N2m with two sureties but remanded in Kirikiri prison pending perfection of his bail.
However the accused has spoken up on the charges levelled against him denying having carnal knowledge of the girl.
Mr. Onuoha has recounted his side of the story and it reads:
“On Monday January 12, 2016 a story went viral on the social media alleging that I molested a 14 year old girl and evaded arrest by the police. I want to categorically state that nothing of such happened.
I would also like to state upfront that I am a responsible family man, I have never had any police case before and I live in a large community with children and nobody has ever laid any complaints against me. I have many tenants and none of them has made any complaint against me.
I got to find out about the alleged molestation case on the afternoon of Wednesday January 6, 2016 hrough a colleague in my office who informed me that a group Human Rights Watch submitted a petition to my Employer that I molested a minor on Monday January 4, 2016.
That same afternoon of Wednesday January 6, I got a call from the Human Rights Watch requesting a meeting with me the following day Thursday January 8, 2016. They later sent me a text message in the evening to cancel the meeting.
I visited my Tenant on Monday January 4, 2016 to collect my 2 years house rent (2013 – 2015) that he owed me. I met his absence with his wife. My tenant is a dishonest and dubious person who has failed many times in his promises. I went round his apartment to confirm he was not hiding with the help of a 16 year old girl that identified herself as my Tenant’s sister. I have visited the above mentioned property with other tenants at least once every quarter for the past five years without any complaints of child molestation against me.
On Thursday January 7, 2016 around 3 pm I got a call from the Police at Langbasa Station Ajah inviting me for questions on the allegation against me. I agreed with the Police Inspector to come to Langbasa Police Station 9 AM on Friday January 8, 2016. The Police Inspector threatened to submit a letter to my office that could lead to my dismissal from work if I did not show up.
On Friday January 8, 2016 morning the Police Inspector called me again and made the same threat in the presence of my Lawyer. I felt she was already biased against me without even hearing from me and I requested my case file to be moved from the Langbasa Police Station to Zone 2 Station that I believe is neutral ground to state my case. I was at Zone 2 Police Station the whole of that Friday trying to forward my petition.
On Monday January 11, 2016 morning the same Police Inspector from Langbasa Station submitted her preliminary report to my Employer and requested that I should report to Langbasa Station. My case file as eventually transferred to Zone 2 Police Station in the afternoon and I was invited to make statement 11 am Tuesday January 12, 2016 which I have already honored. I would like to note that my Tenant was also invited to Zone 2 Police Station that same yesterday and he did not show up.
The intent of this campaign of blackmail and calumny against my person in the Social media I cannot say for now but I will allow the Police to conduct its investigation. I am available to submit myself to any credible process to prove my innocence. Thank you.”
