The Lagos State Government has on Monday, said it impounded a truckload of lethal cowhide (well known as ponmo) at Ijegun, Lagos state.
Dr. Olayiwole Onasanya, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the “Ebola ponmo” was imported into the country by some dishonest individuals.
In a statement released by the Assistant Director of Lagos State Public Affairs, Jide Lawal, Onasanya was quoted as saying that Ikotun police notified the state officials about the imported cowhide after the they had intercepted the truck.
Dr Onasanya pointed out that the seized cowhide was actually preserved with chemicals to serve as a leather material, but was being sold out for human consumption before police intervention.
He also said that the confiscated Ebola ponmo has since been transported to the ministry’s outstation at Johnson Agiri Office Complex, Agege, for disposal at the medical waste dumpsite in Ewu Elepe, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
Adding that, other relevant agencies such as the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and environmental health officers have been duly informed of the discovery and the disposal exercise,” the statement read.
The ministry has however, advised residents to be vigilant and report any suspected sales of unwholesome food items to the nearest local government secretariat or the state ministry of agriculture.
