Twitter Reacts To Buhari Nominating Aide Lauretta Onochie As INEC Commissioner
Twitter is not feeling President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the senate to confirm his media aide, Lauretta Onochie, as a commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to TheCable, Buhari’s request was contained in a letter read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday.
Onochie who hails from Delta state is currently the president’s special assistant on social media. She recently had a row on social media popular singer Wizkid, after he called out the president for not taking action on the complaints of Nigerians protesting against police brutality.
The president premised his request on paragraph 14 (1f) of the constitution. Apart from Onochie, Buhari also asked the senate to confirm Mohammed Sani (Katsina), Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti) and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa) as commissioners of the electoral commission.
The appointment has however displeased many Nigerians so far with many saying that she’s ineligible for the position. See few reactions below:
Who knows the twitter handle of the Minority Leader of the Senate, Sen Abaribe?
Lauretta Onochie's nomination MUST blocked. It is offensive and damn partisan!

Lauretta Onochie is one of the most partisan people in Nigerian public life today. Appointing a take-no-prisoners party spokesperson to serve as a guardian of 🇳🇬’s non-partisan electoral commission is, in my view, utterly negligent and will be incredibly damaging. https://t.co/A32mDvEoi8

Appointing Lauretta Onochie to INEC is a contradiction in terms. How’ll you nominate a staunch member of a political party to a body that is supposed to be independent and will make decisions affecting her party? The Senate should reject her and all others affiliated to a party. https://t.co/EL0GxMEp6i

Buhari just nominated Lauretta Onochie for the position of INEC chairman while we are protesting
We won’t be stopping this protest soon as the president is already moving mad #SARAMUSTEND #EndSARS #SARSMUSTENDNOW

Lauretta Onochie? This one, INEC Commissioner? Never. pic.twitter.com/1BTt4xB802

The appointment of Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner is unconstitutional, undemocratic and ridiculous. Section 14 of Part 1 of Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution provides that a person to be appointed as INEC commissioner must be a person of “unquestionable integrity”.

Give Buhari 8 more years and we will have an INEC chaired by Oshiomhole. Nominating Lauretta Onochie is even small. That is why he is Buhari.

This wicked woman, Lauretta Onochie must be rejected and ejected by the Senate! She's extremely partisan, and definitely unqualified to be Commissioner of INEC
Such a personality has no business heading any Unit in a sane space
She's toxic and flippant. She can never be trusted pic.twitter.com/NVpwSrmIg5

I do not know who Lauretta Onochie is and I do not care. But from the tweets I’ve read, she doesn’t deserve to be nominated as INEC chairman. Remove her!

Lauretta Onochie is a card carrying member of APC and this nomination is invalid, as INEC committee have to be neutral..#RejectLauretta https://t.co/f2sjXsCDCY
