The United States Government has approved Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug and it’s common derivative, for use as a treatment for the coronavirus disease.
This was disclosed by President Donald Trump during a white house task force briefing on Thursday. He revealed that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drugs which are widely used to treat malaria, rheumatic diseases and other conditions.
Chloroquine is a synthetic form of quinine, which has been used to treat malaria since the 1940s.
The drug has recently been used to treat coronavirus patients in China and in France, where some researchers said it showed great promise, though scientists agree that only more trials would determine if it really works and is safe, Nairametrics reports.
