British-Nigerian actor, John Boyega has taken his views on the ill-treatment of black people around the world from social media to the streets as he joined thousands of demonstrators in London on Wednesday to protest against the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, U.S last week.
The Star Wars actor who walked with protesters from parliament to Hyde Park, delivered a rousing speech which has since gone on social media, earning the actor even more acclaim for standing up so vocally for the black community.
Recall that Boyega had been celebrated on social media just last week for using his Twitter account to fight back against racist trolls. A visibly emotional Boyega, with a loudspeaker told the crowd, “Thank you for coming out today, thank you for being here to show your support,” said Boyega, with the crowd chanting “justice now” behind him. “Black people I love you, I appreciate you, today is an important day.
We are fighting for our rights, we are fighting for our ability to live in freedom, we are fighting for our ability to achieve….today you guys are a visible representation of that,” the actor continued.
“I need you to understand how painful it is, to be reminded every day that your race means nothing. That is not the case anymore – we are a physical representation of our support of George Floyd. We are a physical representation of our support for Sandra Bland. We are a physical representation of our support for Trayvon Martin. We are a physical representation of our support for Stephen Lawrence.”
“Black lives have always mattered,” Boyega told his fellow demonstrators. “We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain’t waiting. I’m speaking to you from my heart,”
Boyega added, “Look, I don’t know if I’m going to have a career after this, but fuck that.” Boyega urged his fellow protestors to keep their rally “as peaceful as possible” as to not fall into law enforcement’s trap of “wanting us to mess up, [wanting us] to be disorganized.”
The actor also took to his instagram feed live during the march to deliver a message to Americans. “My brothers and sister in America, listen, we love you. You’re not alone. You’ve given us so much opportunity, you’ve done so much for the world, for culture, that’s why we’re here,” he said.
