The Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN) has over the years been known to take place at Eko Hotel and Suites bringing to bear amazing fashion showcases of designers from all over Nigeria, Africa and the world.
This year, however, fans and attendees of the event will be surprised to note that the usual trip to Eko hotel every year for the fashion event will no longer hold water as the event organisers have switched venues to the National Theatre, Lagos.
The organisers of the event confirmed this on Tuesday during the press conference convened by the official textiles partners for AFWN 2017 – ABC Wax/Da Viva at the UNTL house, Marina, Lagos.
AFWN CEO Princess Ronke Ademuliyi and Creative Director Bayo Haastrup explained that the choice of the National Theatre for this year’s edition of the fashion show was hinged on the fact that the theatre is historical and iconic and will boost the intent of promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
They both added that having used Eko hotel for years, they had decided to opt for the National Theatre for a change seeing as it is even more centralized and will make it easier for the fashion event goers to commute.
AFWN COO Aiki Odiawa noted that with the Afrocentric movement, AFWN intends to seek and implement more ways of promoting the African culture and heritage.
Throwing more light on AFWN 2017, Princess Ademuliyi disclosed that this year’s edition stands out because the show has expanded compared to previous editions as this year over 50 designers will be showcasing their craft, with about 60% of them from Nigeria, 2 from the UK, 1 from Ghana, 2 from Cameroon in addition to exhibitors and models from other countries.
Also speaking, Stephen Dutton, Group Marketing Manager, Group Africa (Nichemtex & Akosombo) – owners of Da Viva, said that as official textile partners of AFWN 2017, the brand will be hosting a solo show where Da Viva will for the first time ever , launch a new collection that will be available immediately at the brand’s outlets.
He noted that for the solo show scheduled for June 3, selected designers Zizi Cardow and Nipo Skin will be live at the venue, adding that some other special highpoints of the show will be the unveiling of the new Da Viva design collection, presentation of iconic ABC designs and latest creative designs, live streaming on social media, and the dedicated models, set and choreography for the day.
Also present at the conference were Nichemtex Brand Product Director Jean William, Brand Merchandise Manager Eke Urum Eke, Brand PRO Carol Arhere-Obi and the Face of AFWN 2017 Amira Ibrahim-Alfa.
