One summer holiday in Nigeria turned around the career of Maleek Shoyebi aka Maleek Berry for good! British-Nigerian producer couldn’t have been signed to Wizkid’s Starboy Records or become a sort after producer by the likes of Wande Coal, Saucekid, Davido and Wizkid if not for the 2011 trip that turned his fortune around for good.
Prior to meeting up with Nigerian superstars, Maleek had been producing for Ikes, a British rapper who hailed from North London. After he established a long term partnership with Ikes, he went on to produce records for some of the hottest UK acts such as S.A.S, Bigz, Scorcher, Jermaine Riley amongst others.
Maleek Berry was born in the heart of South London, Berry grew up listening to some of the biggest names in R&B from Tevin Campbell, Boyz II Men, Jodeci and of course the one and only King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Like most, Berry started off his career in the church, forming a group with two close friends. Managing to get his hands on a little pre-production setup – Fruity Loops – the group began writing, producing and performing their own songs at the ages of 14 and 15.
Maleek Berry, as earlier mentioned, flew to Nigeria for a family holiday in the summer of 2011, and made connections, through his good friend, Nigerian Superstar Davido, with artists such as Wizkid, Saucekid, Wande Coal and more. He also went on the produce the hit ‘Carolina’ which was one of the biggest singles in Nigeria by Sauce Kid in 2011/2012. The song featured Davido.
Earlier this year, Wizkid announced the birth of Starboy Records and he signed Maleek Berry on to the label alongside Legendury Beatz. Maleek’s sound can mostly be heard on Wande Coal and Wizkid’s song these days.
In his own words he’s creating “timeless music that will hopefully last longer than his generation.”
