President Muhammadu Buhari faced fresh backlash on Thursday following his long-awaited address on the ongoing #EndSARS protests and current security situation in the country.
In his less-than 15-minute long live broadcast, the President assured the protesters that their voices have been heard ‘loud and clear’ and urged them to discontinue their demonstrations, saying ‘we are responding’.
Buhari, however, kept mum on the shootings by soldiers in the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos State and other parts of the country, an issue many had expected him to address.
He spoke on everything else from the dissolution of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit at the centre of the protests, to some steps being taken to meet the five-point demands of protesters, police reforms, the involvement of the international community and poverty alleviation initiatives targetted at the youth and other vulnerable groups in society.
Many Nigerians have been enraged by the President’s speech and have taken to social media to express their despair and disappointment over his handling of the situation. Some pointed out that he didn’t address the Lekki shooting and the lives lost. Most said they have no more hope in Nigeria and expressed eagerness to leave the county.
See few reactions below:
Listening again to General @MBuhari’s speech, all I saw was blame. Nothing is ever Buhari’s fault. #EndSARS is the fault of #LazyNigerianYouths, and not a President that has refused to try rogue cops. Buhari is a poster boy for the saying that when you are lame, you love to blame

Why is killer @MBuhari still talking about the Trader Moni at the midst of piling bodies almost everywhere in the country? What pains is the fact that that monster didn't even mentioned #LekkitollgateMassacre
Allah ya isa Buhari..😥😥

The man Buhari is incompetent. He can not help it, even if he tries. The people around him same thing too. Those around him know and that's why it takes days to prepare him to do anything. Which still ends up as nonsense. A prime example was his live talk with his vice on NTA.

Buhari's speech was an insult to our people, a disgrace to humanity & a stench in the nostrils of God.
He is not warm, he is cold. He is not kind, he is cruel. He is not empathetic, he is sociopathic.
He is not a President,he is a dictator. He is not a man, he is a monster.1/3 pic.twitter.com/cnjswK3Oha

The moment Buhari said "so-called Protesters", I immediately knew Femi Adesina wrote the speech.
Adesina lacks moral rectitude.

President Buhari is soulless!

The greatest tragedy isn't Buhari's lifeless speech. It is to forget the collective power with which we delivered #EndSARS This is their plan, let this not happen.
With this power, we can change the reality of our nation.
I deeply bow before young Nigerians🙌 #ItIsNotFinished

Buhari’s speech showed us that the phrase: “I will shoot you and nothing will happen” reflects the decay of governance in Nigeria. The impunity runs rampant, from the policeman right up to the President

woke up this morning and still wondering how Buhari gave a broadcast and forgot to mention the pressing issue that his citizens needed to hear, he acted as there was nothing like #LekkiMassaccre. How I wish I knew how to invoke Sango😭😭.
Online protesters, we not giving up!
